Tips on Engraving Silver

Posted by hiqakyaaaa | Dremel E | Wednesday 4 August 2010 9:04 am

Engraving is something that can be done in creating the special gift and sentiment. Having special engraving done may get more expensive, as because it is charged at the rate per letter. With some practices and the great tools, you can engrave your own pieces by yourself. Just read some easy steps below.

For the first step that should be done is that you have to remove any grime of the dirt form the surface of the silver piece. Use a torch in order to heat up a silver piece until the slight orange color will be seen all over. It will make the metal soft and also better to accept the engraving. You can allow cooling slightly and after that place into picking solution in cleaning off from the heating.

For the second step, you can sand off every remaining residue from the heating. You have to be sure that there are no scratch marks left on the silver. After that, you should practice the design on the scrap piece of metal just like copper. Place the blade engraving tool into the Dremel and tighten.

Press tightly into the metal with a razor tip and then draw out your design. Go over it several times if it is needed to deepen the depth of the engraving. This kind of tools will shake a bit; therefore you have to be sure in holding it firmly and also keep it steady.

For the next step, you have to take the dapping metal hammer and also the steel alphabet set. Then, place the letter of choice against the metal and use a hammer against the back of the steel template in engraving the letter. You need to repeat for every letter. Make sure that you will be careful that the spacing will be done accurately.

Repeat the design now onto a silver piece before the practice piece has turned out how you want it. For the last step, use a buffing wheel in shining the silver piece. Inspect the piece to ensure that it is ready to give away.

Dremel engraver is the tool that can be used in engraving process. There are many engraver tools available to you. If you want to know more about the, you can visit on www.laserengravingsupplies.org.

How To Fix A Bad Ceramic Tile Floor

Posted by hiqakyaaaa | Dremel E | Monday 2 August 2010 8:15 pm

Ceramic tile in a kitchen can really stand out and give an expensive and updated feel. This type of flooring is very durable and can last for many years, and is even rated to last as long as the structure. But, if the ceramic tile is not properly installed, it can actually take away from the beauty and elegance of the flooring. Easy problems to fix can include too much grout between the tiles, and then the grout not being sealed. These problems are do-it-yourself fixes, which can be done during a weekend.

Grout is the material between the tiles, which fills in the spaces after the tiles are installed. There are different colors of grout you can use, along with different types. Most people tend to use a white or off white grout, for their ceramic tile floors. Sometimes, you may end up with too much grout in between the tiles. This may be the case if you buy a house with ceramic floors, or if you have installed the ceramic tile yourself. If this happens, and the grout is now dry, there is a very easy way to remove this extra grout.

The hardware stores sell a tool known as a dremel tool. This is basically a cordless screwdriver, and comes with a bunch of different attachments. They also make special attachments directly for ceramic tile removal. You can actually repair the grout 2 ways: You can remove all of the grout and redo the grout, or just grind it down a bit so all of the grout is the same level or depth. This article looks at just grinding down the grout to the same level.

Now you have the grout looking the same. Most likely, it will still be dirty. Grout is very porous, which means it has many holes in it which allow for dirt to get into. You need to seal this, but before you seal it, you need to clean it. There are many grout cleaners out there, and all of these will work. But good old bleach will also do the trick. Mix a bucket of 50/50 with bleach and water, and scrub out the grout. This bleach mixture will help to clean and brighten the grout, and will also kill any mold or mildew which may be growing in the grout. Once you are done, mop the floor and see how the grout looks. Repeat this process until the grout is the color you are looking for. Now you need to seal it.

Before you seal it, ensure the grout is completely dry. You can buy the grout sealer at any of the hardware stores. Ensure to read the directions on this, but most of the sealers are all the same. Just apply the sealer to the grout, not the tile. This will take some time, as you will need a small paint brush and a steady hand. If you get any on the tiles, just wipe it off immediately. This sealer will seal all of the holes in the grout, and help to keep out any of the water or dirt. This will keep the grout the same color as the original color. Also, when you mop the floor, the mop water will not get into the grout. Sealers are very important. If you choose not to use it, your grout will get dirty again, and you will be scrubbing it again.

With a dremel, a ceramic tile grout remover, some bleach, and a sealer, you can get your ceramic tile looking like new again. Money has already been heavily invested into the flooring, so with a little sweat equity and some time, you can get your ceramic tile floor fixed and back to its original appearance.

Is Your Tattoo Causing You Problems and Preventing You From Becoming Employed?

Posted by hiqakyaaaa | Dremel E | Tuesday 27 July 2010 12:26 am

Getting Rid of That Tat: Tattoo Removal and Hiding Options

You loved it once and it was fun getting and showing off to your friends at one time. It said who you were and expressed your thoughts about issues and loved ones. You used to really like that tattoo of yours but now it is faded, does not say who you are or what you believe in (or who you love) anymore and, to top it off, you need a job and most employers do not allow tattoos. So that tat must go but how to get rid of it?

You May Not Have to Get That Tat Removed!

No matter which route you take to get a tattoo removed, it may cost money you just do not have. One way to avoid the expense of any type of tattoo procedure is to hide it. There is tattoo cover up clothing available for just about any part of the body; if the tat is on your face, however, you are sunk unless you use tattoo cover up makeup.

TatJacket is the most popular tattoo cover up apparel that is also the least expensive option for hiding tattoos. The material is a light-weight stretchy and breathable “second skin” that comes in an assortment of styles from arm sleeves to full t-shirts. Prices start at $17.99.

What is also nice about TatJacket products is that they can be worn under other clothing without breaking any ‘fashion codes’, especially for women. For that reason, many women opt for this product in black.

Tattoo cover up makeup is also an option and there are many different kinds available on the market from liquid to thick pancake makeup. Tattoo makeup can take experimentation with color mixing and practice with application but is the cheapest way around the tat cover up dilemma.

Tattoo Removal Creams and Other Home Systems

Tattoo removal systems include ‘fading’ ointments and chemical peels. The effectiveness of these tattoo products vary but WreckingBalm® combines a fading cream and use of a dermabrasion appliance. Tattoo removal creams, gels, and liquids take some time to fade a tattoo to obliteration, often 4 to 6 months or longer, depending on the size, color(s), and age of a tattoo. Prices vary according to each manufacturer, but the average cost of using an at-home system will run around $200 on the average to remove a tattoo.

Surgical Tattoo Removal

Surgical removal with lasers and excision are the most expensive options, although the most preferred for getting rid of tattoos. Laser removal will often take several sessions depending on the size and makeup of the tattoo. Laser removal can be painful; therefore, most people pay the additional cost for anesthetic to numb the area. Laser tattoo removal can also be at risk for infection and often leaves scarring of the skin.

Surgical excision is the fastest way to remove a tattoo but will most often leave a scar. In addition, depending on the size of the tattoo, skin grafts (usually from a thigh) may be needed to replace the excised skin. Either of these two surgical tattoo removal methods can cost upwards of $10,000.

Home Tattoo Removal Methods to Avoid Like the Plague

Never, ever use these methods. You will absolutely invite infection and probable scarring, even risky blood loss.

  1. Any sort of burning appliance such as irons.
  2. Electric sanders and dremel tools.
  3. The application of acid.
  4. Cutting out of the tattoo with a knife.

As a side note: Never get a tattoo if you are drunk!

So, THINK TWICE Before Getting Tattooed in the First Place!

Yes, getting a tattoo may be fun but may cost you a LOT of time and money if you to have it removed for any reason.

Varnishing Yacht Brightwork

Posted by hiqakyaaaa | Dremel E | Tuesday 20 July 2010 1:33 pm

Varnishing You Yacht’s Brightwork; Let’s Get Ready

Shopping List

- Your choice of varnish

- Mineral spirits·

- Foam brushes (I like the ones from Wal-Mart)

- Tack rags

- Bleach

If you are starting with bare teak you may wish to use the Cetol Marine which has some pigment in it. I prefer to use two coats of it on bare teak to give it a nice color to it. I follow this with 4 coats of gloss. On previously finished wood rails, I use only gloss. Each year, the varnish builds up so you’ll have to strip it down and start over every 5-6 years or so.

This year I only used 3 coats of gloss as I stripped it down to bare wood last year.

Cetol advises not to thin their product with thinners. Ignore that advise! I cut my Cetol with mineral spirits at least 30%; if it’s in the 90 degree temperatures and up to 50%. The rational for doing this is that it allows the Cetol to flow and level itself, reducing the irregular results you will get otherwise. Cetol directly out of the can will flow more like honey than a paint.

My choice of applicator is a 2 inch foam brush. No brush hairs to deal with and it glides on without brush marks.

Let’s Lay Some Varnish

Ok, we are almost prepared but there’s one more step you want to do. Bright work has a tendency to get mold under the varnish on the wood over time. You’ll need to kill any potential spores with a rag dampened with bleach and wiped over the teak prior to the first coat. The bleach will not raise the grain nor will it damage any bare wood.

OK, let’s varnish.

Dampen the foam brush with Cetol and apply the varnish to the teak in about 6-10 inch stokes. Apply it lightly to avoid runs always watching your work to catch that run that does occur. Always keep a wet edge, meaning you brush into the previously wetted surfaces to avert drags from drying varnish. The process seems to be moving slow but it does go fast.

Be sure to allow time to dry before reapplying another; perhaps two or even three can be applied in a single day if the weather permits. I use a tack rag to remove any dust before laying another coat. There is no requirement to sand between coats when using Cetol.

I find that six coats of Cetol will give you a gorgeous finish.

Time – 2 hours each coat

Total application time – 6 hours

Step 4- Time to Clean Up

Remember we put the tape on certain spots for catching the overlooked brush strokes? It required me about 5 minutes to remove it all. I spent nearly 4 hours with a Dremel tool and brush a while ago removing the varnish that the Patricia Ann’s past owner had “applied”.

Not bad; it looks good to me. All said it took my wife and I a total of 8.5 hours out of a 2 day weekend to put the bright work back into Bristol condition. maintaining teak brightwork is not such a bid chore after all.

The Frugal Fisherman: Part II

Posted by hiqakyaaaa | Dremel E | Wednesday 14 July 2010 6:36 pm

For those of you that don’t know this, fishermen by nature are a frugal lot.

Being penny wise and pound foolish is standard fare, and I am no different.

I recently noticed that the felt soles on my wading boots had become worn out on the bottom. I found this out the hard way,of course, discovering this while fishing on the river, going into my rendition of the “slick rock disco”, and falling into “the drink”.You would think I would have noticed that my felt soles had worn out and that I was now wearing hockey skates in the water, but with my wading boots being much like my car, I just get in them and go.

I headed on down to “The Blackbird”, which is my favorite outdoor store–(not because of service or price but because they have this giant fifty foot, black and yellow blackbird statue in the parking lot)–and proceeded to reaquaint myself with wading boot prices. Having last bought wading boots circa 1990, fifteen years inflation certainly caused my jaw to drop.

Outside of standing there and looking like one of the “appalachian” characters from the movie Deliverance, I was quickly convinced that my boots still had plenty of life in them, and that a “re-sole-ing” was the answer. I found that my good friend Hodgeman made felt sole replacements for my boots, and that the fifteen dollar cost was quite reasonable.

I also thought this would allow me to “become one” with my boots and give me that nice “do it yourself” project, that gives one that warm satisfying moment when one feels self-suffecient.

You see it coming, don’t you?

The instructions seemed fairly simple,Step 1: first remove the old felt soles.

Since. there wasn’t much felt sole left, this didn’t seem like a very demanding first step.

But, what was left was secured to the bottom of the boot like a barnicle to a pier. I pulled and peeled and cut, (and at one point seriously consideredusing my Dremel tool) until finally getting enough old sole removed.

Step 2: Spread a thin layer of supplied “felt sole cement” on the felt, wait 30 minutes.

This went rather well. No problemo.

While I waited, I “scuffed” up the bottom of the boots to help with the adhereing of the felt soles.

This seemed rather redundant, since I had gouged up the bottoms pretty well during the felt removal process.

Step 3: Repeat spreading of “felt sole cement”, wait thirty minutes and secure felt to bottom of boots. Note:You may want to use a generous amount of tape to help hold the felt in place and help secure the heel and toe area.

Boy, was that an understatement.

After about a roll of duct tape and the use of some large c-clamps that were laying around, I think I finally got the felt to adhere to the boot. I say “think”, because there is so much duct tape around the boot that I can no longer even see the felt sole and can only trust that the tape has secured the two surfaces together. Not to mention that the boots now look like a pair of freakish silver Michael Jackson dancing spats or a pair of “punked out” Air FrankenJordans.

Step 4: Allow eight hours drying time.

This is where I am at now.Past history tells me that nothing good can come of this.

I am afraid to remove the tape, feeling the same anxiety a plastic surgery patient feels when they remove the bandages. Maybe I am being a touch negative here, but I have the feeling when I remove the duct tape– that of course assuming I can get the sticky duct tape off– the felt sole will simply fall to the ground, be stuck to the duct tape, or that the shoes will scream”I’m alive, I’M ALIVE HA ha ha ha….”

At this point I feel compelled to show you an actual “un-retouched” photo of my boot repair operation. If you are unable to view this wherever you are reading this you might want to visit http://www.twoguyswithflys.com in order to get a full understanding.

Yes, these are my wading boots. This is what they have become!

Perhaps, the boots will remain shaped in this contorted figure that the duct tape-clamping combination has transformed them into. With my luck, I will be walking around with the toes pointed skyward like some “pixie shoed- fishing gnome”, with leaves all stuck to the outer surface because of the tape “residue” left on the outside of the boot!!

Maybe, the soles will initially be fine and as soon as I hit the cold clear water of the Rogue river they will just simply shrink up and fall off.We all know about shrinkage and cold water-now don’t we fellas?!

I just have a BAD FEELING about this!!

At any rate, I will be back down at the “Blackbird” this afternoon repricing wading boots.

As usual, I will have spent fifteen dollars more than the actual price of the boots, and wasted two hours “becoming one” with my boots.

I don’t know what it is that makes us fishermen so frugal and why I continually get sucked into thinking I can “do-it-myself”, but I know this won’t be the last time…

…In fact, there is this pin hole in my breathable waders somewhere that I can’t find, anyone know how much a patch kit is?
